Combat of damage to gambling in the armed forces

The damage to gambling remains a problem largely hidden in the armed forces, but a project led by Gamcare is working to change it.
Launched in 2024, the development project of the armed forces (AFDP) aims to increase awareness of the damage related to gambling between service staff and ensuring that support systems are accessible and effective for affected people.
The military environment can create unique risk factors for the damage to gambling. High pressure roles, long periods of distance from the family and feelings of stress and isolation can contribute to harmful behavior of play.
The research shows that members of the armed forces are more likely to prove damage related to gambling than the general population. Despite this, the stigma, the lack of awareness and the limited understanding of support services mean that many do not seek help until they reach a point of crisis.
In response, Gamcare provided targeted interventions through the project of the armed forces. The project has already provided tailor -made training to over 1,000 service membersWhile appearances in health fairs have reached many thousands of others.
The training sessions, offers both in person and online, are adapted for a different audience, from soldiers on the ground to wellness support agents. The goal is twofold: prevent damage through early awareness and improve answers when someone is already fighting.
The results of the initial evaluation suggest promising progress. The pre-installation investigations revealed that while most participants had a general awareness of gambling, they were less informed about how to access the help or if the support was encouraged inside the army.
After receiving the formation from Gamcare, the feedback highlighted a greater understanding, trust in discussing game problems and enthusiasm to learn more. In fact, all the welfare agents interviewed have declared that they would recommend training to others and almost all normal staff has agreed.
However, challenges remain. Damage to gambling can be difficult to detect; He is often masked by secret and feelings of guilt or shame can make it difficult for people to seek help. Unlike more visible problems such as alcohol abuse, harmful gambling often goes unnoticed until the consequences are serious. This underlines the importance of a proactive and preventive approach such as that of the FDP.
Looking to the future, the project will focus on the improvement of its support models, on the involvement of people with experienced experience and on the influence of the wider cultural changes within the armed forces.
The final goal? To ensure that the damage to gambling is no longer hidden or ignored, but recognized as a problem of legitimate well -being, which deserves attention, understanding and action.
With guaranteed funding until March 2026, the AFDP represents a crucial step towards the construction of a military culture in which the search for help and the damage to gambling is normalized is welcomed with informed and compassionate support. In this way, it could offer a model to face this complex problem in high -risk communities throughout the United Kingdom.
